Guernsey Museums & Galleries is a service provided by the government of Guernsey, one of the British Crown Dependencies known as the Channel Islands. As part of a Culture & Leisure Department, our service runs eight museums at four locations and is responsible for some eighty historic sites around the island.

Artwork of the Month

Each month the museum highlights a single artwork, either from our own collection or from a living local artist. This allows for a focused (and free-of-charge) exploration of the individual work, away from the distractions of the main museum. The work for September 2010 features the current 'A Paining a Day' project by local artist Rob Sweeney.

The Guernsey Museums & Galleries service now has a presence on Flickr! Historic Sites Curator Helen Glencross established this to showcase the entries from our recent photography competition. We will be adding images of events at our museums and sites to the Group Pool and would be delighted if visitors did the same. (If you are viewing this page within our website the link above will generate a message about Flickr not opening in a frame and offer a link which will take you away from our site. Copy and Paste the following address - http://www.flickr.com/groups/guernsey_museum - into the address bar of a new tab if you would like to open our Flickr content in a new browser window)

A large number of wartime deportees and their families joined other invited guests at the official opening of our latest exhibition last evening. Culture and Leisure Minister Mike O'Hara introduced Sir Geoffrey Rowland, Bailiff of Guernsey, who opened the exhibition with the assistance of Dr Gillian Carr of Cambridge University. Dr. Carr co-curated the exhibition with our Social History Officer, Matt Harvey and was inspired to research the stories and activities of the deportees when exploring her own family's history. The town of Biberach, location of one of the iternment camps, was represented at the opening and a congratulatory message from Biberach's mayor was read to the assembled guests. The exhibition is at Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery until 12th September and shows a truly astonishing range of creativity, produced under trying circumstances.
