2016 March Artwork of the Month
Pavilion, Officers' Barracks, Guernsey
Artist: unknown. Early 19th century.
Medium: watercolour on paper
Status: permanent collection (GMAG 2016.48)
This recently acquired watercolour shows a fascinating everyday scene, captured by an amateur artist, possibly one of the officers themselves.
Although rather naive in nature, the picture does capture a sense of what the barracks would have been like at the time. The charming details of the jumping dogs give the picture an informal air, a true window into the past.
We are not sure of the exact location depicted, and if those distinctive arches are still in existence.
