2017 November Artwork of the Month
Moon River
Artist: Olwen Lane
Medium: Textile
Status: On loan from the artist
The local artist Olwen Lane first experienced working with textiles as a young girl. By the time she began training as a needlecraft teacher during the 1960s, she had already acquired the skills to make her own clothes.
This piece of textile art, worked in relief, was influenced by the experimental embroidery that developed in the 1980s. It is also inspired by the natural world, specifically David Attenborough's 'The Living Planet'.
Having the working title 'Moon River', it remains sufficiently abstract as to be interpreted as 'other-worldly' as much as a conventional scene.
