Rocky Shore, Sark, 1894

Artist: Frederick Judd Waugh (1861-1940)

Medium: oil on canvas

Status: permanent collection

Frederick Judd Waugh was born in Bordentown, N.J. and studied at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Julian Academy in Paris. He exhibited in Paris in 1892 and in London in 1894-1905, after which he returned to America. Soon after returning to America he painted a large canvas 'The Roaring Forties' which was subsequently bought by the Metropolitan Museum.

Waugh eventually settled in Provincetown, Massachusetts where he built an unusual studio of old ships' timbers on the outer shore of Cape Cod. Here he painted the coastal scenes for which he became most celebrated.
