Artwork of the Month - May 2015

May AOTM 2015

Fort Grey

Artist:  Michelle Hooper

Medium:  Textile collage

Status:  Loaned by the artist

Michelle is a self-taught textile artist, who uses recycled fabrics. Her work is influenced by the Island's landscapes and wildlife, which she is passionate about.

"After acquiring a 20-year-old sewing machine three years ago I started thinking about how I could use my new addition. Having only really been familiar with painting and drawing, I had limited experience in the art of textiles. After studying other artists' works, I got a feel for what I wanted to create myself. With so many of Guernsey's most beautiful landscapes and landmarks practically on my doorstep, I decided that I wanted to recreate these scenes using various fabrics. After many self-taught lessons in using a sewing machine, I finally settled on a style of working I was happy with, which has led me to where I am today."

As well as producing original works Michelle has also produced a range of greetings cards that feature some of her original artwork.
