2016 December Artwork of the Month
Hugo and the Robin, 2016
Artist: Kevin Hickman (b. 1957)
Chroma Colour
Status: permanent collection
Each year the Museum reproduces one of the paintings from its collection for its Christmas card. This year we decided to commission the local artist Kevin Hickman, to create an artwork for this purpose.
Kevin Hickman left school at fifteen with no formal qualifications, but he always had a love of drawing and continued this when he left school. When Kevin was eighteen a friend introduced him to the art of watercolour painting, which he said started the long, and at times frustrating road to teaching himself to paint.
Since then he has worked in various mediums, but has always strived to be true to nature. During this process Kevin also began to specialize in bird paintings, influenced by artists such as Raymond Harris Ching.
Hickman has had several exhibitions at the Coach House Gallery as well as exhibitions in aid of various charities, including the local RSPB.
The Museum would like to commission a local artist for its 2017 Christmas card, and is inviting local artists to apply to Helen Conlon, the Museum's Art Curator.
