May 2016 Artwork of the Month

Eyebright sq(2), 2015

Artist: Christine Shaw

Medium: printed translucency on acrylic

Status:  on loan from artist

Christine Shaw is a Guernsey born artist who has achieved artistic acclaim in many local Eisteddfod competitions with her pen and ink and watercolour drawings. She has had commissions to create artworks for a number of public spaces including Beau Sejour leisure centre and the Guernsey Housing Association.

In 2012 Shaw completed her Higher National Diploma in Fine Art at the Guernsey College of Further Education, allowing her work to become more diverse, innovative and contemporary.

Eyebright sq(2) is part of a larger series of photographic studies originally displayed at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital. These works evolved from a single photograph capturing the reflections of her eye.

Christine says, "I aim to create unique works through a process of innovation and experimentation using a variety of media, in response to nature and the natural environment."

Although experimental, there are elements within these pieces that hark back to her earlier work. The stippling effects are reminiscent of those found in pen and ink drawings and the translucency is similar to that of watercolour.
